PSG Edges Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now claimed the prestigious trophy on 14 different times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful spot-kick decider to get past Marseille in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a comfortable triumph in the match featuring the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger opened the net early on.

Yet, Marseille fired twice in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of events, Goncalo Ramos grabbed a crucial equaliser in the dying moments to send the contest into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then stood as the hero, saving crucial kicks from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, the full-back, and the young talent all scored with composure for PSG to seal a convincing penalty win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now won this trophy for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
