Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies pose an grave risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere 13.5% growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
